What is an Individual Tax identification number (ITIN)?

  • An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service. It is a nine digit number that always begins with the number 9 and has a 7 or 8 in the fourth digit, example 9XX-7X-XXXX.  IRS issues ITINs to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but who do not have, and are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN) from the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Who needs an ITIN?

  • IRS issues ITINs to foreign nationals and others who have federal tax reporting or filing requirements and do not qualify for SSNs. A non-resident alien individual not eligible for a SSN who is required to file a U.S. tax return only to claim a refund of tax under the provisions of a U.S. tax treaty needs an ITIN.

What is a Certified Acceptance Agent (CAA)?

  • Acceptance Agents(AA) can only review supporting identification documentation proving foreign status and identity, and attach original copies from the issuing agency to Form W-7.  The originals are then mailed to the IRS for processing.
  • Certifying Acceptance Agents(CAA) review and validate supporting identification documentation proving foreign status and identity, and identify them on their Form W-7 COA, Certificate of Accuracy. Copies of documents for primary and secondary applicants must be sent to the IRS with the W-7 COA.

What are the Clear Accounting Advantages?

  •  Clear Accounting is authorized by IRS ITIN office and we can issue the Certificate of Accuracy (COA) letter.
  • The COA letter is issued when the taxpayer presents original passport by the foreign issuing agency to the CAA at Clear Accounting.
  •  There is NO requirement to mail the original Passport to the IRS when using our service at Clear Accounting.  This is unlike an Acceptance Agent (AA) or ITIN application prepared by the taxpayer or other where they must send the originals copies must be sent to IRS.
  • Clear Accounting also prepares and signs the ITIN application and the COA letter.
  • Clear Accounting can assist you in resolving your application should there be an issue.

How and when can I expect to receive my ITIN?

  • If you qualify for an ITIN and your application is complete, you will receive a letter from the IRS assigning your tax identification number usually within seven weeks. If you have not received your ITIN or other correspondence seven weeks after applying, call the IRS toll-free number at 1-800-829-1040 to request the status of your application if you are in the United States. If you are outside the United States, call 267-941-1000 (not a toll-free number).
